Announcing the Best Book of 2011

February 21, 2011 by Phil Gons

I haven’t gotten my copy of The Christian Faith yet, but I’m pretty confident that it’s great based on the feedback it’s getting.

However, it seems a tad premature to announce it as the best book of 2011 not even two months into the year, does it not?

Monergism Announced The Christian Faith As the 2011 Book of Year

It’s kind of like announcing the winner of the Super Bowl after the first touchdown.

Bonhoeffer Buzz

January 18, 2011 by Phil Gons

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, SpyDietrich Bonhoeffer has been the subject of some interesting discussion recently. If you missed it, here’s a quick overview.

  1. It started with the publication of Eric Metaxas’s “groundbreaking biography” Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy (Amazon | WTS Books).
  2. Its publication has been largely met with rave reviews, awards, and lots of secular press.
    • It has 174 reviews on Amazon with an average of 4 ½ stars. (See also here.)
    • It ranked high in the list of the top 25 titles of Barnes & Noble’s Best Nonfiction Books of 2010. It also made the top books of the year lists from CBD Academic, Relevant Magazine, The Gospel Coalition, Kirkus Reviews, and the Zambian Economist.
    • It was covered on National Review, Fox News, Harper’s Magazine, The New Republic, and several other places.
  3. Bonhoeffer scholars Richard Weikart and Clifford Green called Metaxas’s reading of Bonhoeffer into question.
  4. Blogger Tim Challies highlighted these critiques in a recent post.
  5. Church historian Carl Trueman weighed in with some wise insight.

Michael Horton’s New Systematic Theology

January 12, 2011 by Phil Gons

Michael Horton’s long-awaited systematic theology, The Christian Faith: A Systematic Theology for Pilgrims on the Way (Amazon | WTS Books), is due out very soon. Zondervan’s website says it’s “coming January 2011.” Amazon says “January 25, 2011.” WTS Books says “February 2011.”

Systematic theologies are one of my favorite categories of books, so I’m really looking forward to picking this one up and adding it to my library.

The Christian Faith

Details

The Christian Faith runs 1,052 pages (which is the last numbered page according to Zondervan’s “Browse Inside” feature).1 It has a list price of $49.99, but the Westminster Bookstore has will be selling it for $30.99, and Amazon has it available for pre-order for $31.17 (or $30.99 for Kindle).

  1. WTS Books incorrectly lists 960 pages, and Zondervan and Amazon say 1056, perhaps including ads or blank pages at the end. [↩]

Works of Michael Barrett Coming to Logos

November 16, 2010 by Phil Gons

Michael Barrett CollectionI’m very excited at the prospect of having the works of one of the most influential Bible teachers in my life, Dr. Michael P. V. Barrett, available digitally for Logos Bible Software in the four-volume Michael Barrett Collection. I’m also happy that many who don’t know anything about him might soon have the chance to be enriched by his excellent teaching.

The collection includes his four books published by Ambassador International:

  • Beginning at Moses: A Guide to Finding Christ in the Old Testament (1999)
  • Complete in Him: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying the Gospel (2000)
  • God’s Unfailing Purpose: The Message of Daniel (2003)
  • The Beauty of Holiness: A Guide to Biblical Worship (2006)

It doesn’t include his Love Divine and Unfailing: The Gospel according to Hosea, which was published by P&R.

I’ve mentioned Barrett’s works before. His chapter “Union with Christ: The Security of the Gospel” in Complete in Him (93–118) is one of the top picks in my list of resources on union with Christ. Sadly, it was out of print recently. But thanks in part to Chris Anderson’s efforts, it’s back in print for the time being. The others are in limited supply.

Free Amazon Prime for Students

July 14, 2010 by Phil Gons

Amazon PrimeAmazon is currently offering a free one-year subscription to Amazon Prime, which will give you free two-day shipping on most items that Amazon sells with the option to upgrade to one-day shipping for $3.99. The annual cost for Amazon Prime is $79, so this is a great deal that every student should take advantage of, even if you only shop at Amazon occasionally.

Undergraduate and graduate students qualify for the free subscription. To sign up, you’ll just need to do enter your .edu email address and choose your state, school, year, and major. I’m not sure how long they’re running this special, but if you’re a student, I’d recommend signing up soon.

Writing Standards for the Web

June 28, 2010 by Phil Gons

The Yahoo! Style GuideIs it e-mail or email, Internet or internet, Web site, Website, or website? In a new book that deals with standards for writing online, Yahoo addresses these questions and many more. Coming in at 528 pages, The Yahoo! Style Guide: The Ultimate Sourcebook for Writing, Editing, and Creating Content for the Digital World is available for pre-order from Amazon for $14.84 and is scheduled to ship on July 6. Some of the content is also available online, as well as supplementary content not available in the book.

Standard guides like The Associated Press Stylebook1 and The Chicago Manual of Style will remain useful and worth consulting. But there’s a lot these tried and true guides don’t cover, and I find them to be a tad dated when it comes to keeping up with the fast-paced world of the Facebook, Twitter, blogging, etc. For example, AP just recently switched from Web site to website.

Peter Hitchens: The Rage Against God

March 25, 2010 by Phil Gons

The Rage Against GodPeter Hitchens (blog), brother of the well-known atheist Christopher Hitchens (website), talks about his faith and his forthcoming book The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith (to be published by Zondervan and due out on May 1) in these two videos.

They’re an interesting watch. The first is only 2:08. If you don’t have 8:38 to spare for the second, I’d recommend starting at 4:10.

A. A. Hodge on the Importance of Doctrine

March 24, 2010 by Phil Gons

Justin Taylor mentioned two books on the importance of theology earlier today—one new and one old: The Trials of Theology: Becoming a “Proven Worker” in a Dangerous Business (Amazon), edited by Andrew Cameron and Brian Rosner, and Helmut Thielicke’s A Little Exercise for Young Theologians (Amazon). Both look good.

There’s also been a lot of buzz recently about Josh Harris’s Dug Down Deep: Unearthing What I Believe and Why It Matters (Amazon) and Mark Driscoll’s Doctrine: What Christians Should Believe (Amazon).

Finally, two forthcoming volumes caught my eye recently: Michael Horton’s The Christian Faith: A Systematic Theology for Pilgrims on the Way (Amazon), due out in October, and Fred Zaspel’s The Theology of B. B. Warfield: A Systematic Summary (Amazon), due out in September.
