The Story of Zac Smith

March 27, 2010 by Phil Gons

I encourage you to invest four-and-a-half minutes of your day watching this powerful and moving video about Zac Smith’s cancer, faith, and God.

The Story of Zac Smith from NewSpring Media on Vimeo.

Here are his concluding comments: “This I do know. If God chooses to heal me, then God is God, and God is good. If God chooses not to heal me and allows me to die, God is still God, and God is still good. To God be the glory.”

Peter Hitchens: The Rage Against God

March 25, 2010 by Phil Gons

The Rage Against GodPeter Hitchens (blog), brother of the well-known atheist Christopher Hitchens (website), talks about his faith and his forthcoming book The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith (to be published by Zondervan and due out on May 1) in these two videos.

They’re an interesting watch. The first is only 2:08. If you don’t have 8:38 to spare for the second, I’d recommend starting at 4:10.

A. A. Hodge on the Importance of Doctrine

March 24, 2010 by Phil Gons

Justin Taylor mentioned two books on the importance of theology earlier today—one new and one old: The Trials of Theology: Becoming a “Proven Worker” in a Dangerous Business (Amazon), edited by Andrew Cameron and Brian Rosner, and Helmut Thielicke’s A Little Exercise for Young Theologians (Amazon). Both look good.

There’s also been a lot of buzz recently about Josh Harris’s Dug Down Deep: Unearthing What I Believe and Why It Matters (Amazon) and Mark Driscoll’s Doctrine: What Christians Should Believe (Amazon).

Finally, two forthcoming volumes caught my eye recently: Michael Horton’s The Christian Faith: A Systematic Theology for Pilgrims on the Way (Amazon), due out in October, and Fred Zaspel’s The Theology of B. B. Warfield: A Systematic Summary (Amazon), due out in September.

Creation, Evolution, and the Age of the Earth

February 23, 2010 by Phil Gons

Earth

I’ve seen several posts recently on the subject of creation, evolution, and the age of the earth. If you missed them and are interested in these kinds of discussions, you may want to give them a read.

  • Do you believe God created the earth in six literal 24-hour days? by Randy Alcorn
  • Why I’m Not a Creationist (Anymore), by Josh Sowin
  • Why I’m Neither a Creationist Nor an Evolutionist, by Collin Brendemuehl
  • Why I Am a Middle-Aged Young/Old-Earth Creationist, by David T. Koyzis

(See below for some related videos and conferences.)

I grew up believing that God created the universe out of nothing in six 24-hour days and that the earth was about 6,000 years old. My first real exposure to opposing Christian viewpoints was in Systematic Theology I in seminary, where we used Millard Erickson’s Christian Theology1 as our main textbook.

Centrality of the Gospel in the Life of the Believer

February 18, 2010 by Phil Gons

Tullian Tchividjian articulates beautifully one of the most transforming truths I’ve ever learned: the gospel is central in the daily life of the believer. It is well worth 2 minutes and 25 seconds of your time.

Free Audiobook: Machen’s Christianity and Liberalism

February 15, 2010 by Phil Gons

The folks at ReformedAudio.org have just completed an audio version of J. Gresham Machen’s classic work Christianity and Liberalism. It’s available in 11 MP3 files and runs 5 hours 44 minutes and 36 seconds. They are making the audio and a PDF of the book available free of charge.

To learn more about Christianity and Liberalism and Reformed Audio, watch this short introductory video (embedded below).

Systematic Theology Series

August 9, 2009 by Phil Gons

Systematic theologies are some of my favorite books. I have nearly 50 in my print and digital libraries and a list of more than two hundred others that I’m working to see added to Logos Bible Software’s already impressive digital offerings. The vast majority of systematic theologies are written by one author, and more often than not they fill a single volume. But there are a couple of “systematic theologies” that are made up of a series of books featuring a different author and volume on each of the main themes of evangelical theology.

Two series that I’m fairly well acquainted with are Crossway’s Foundations of Evangelical Theology (Crossway’s listing) and IVP’s Contours of Christian Theology (IVP’s listing).

Foundations of Evangelical Theology

The Cross and Salvation: The Doctrine of SalvationBased on the listing in the front of No One Like Him, it appears that there are ten volumes projected, but there are currently four in print:

  1. Demarest, Bruce. The Cross and Salvation: The Doctrine of Salvation. 1997. 544 pp. [Amazon | Crossway | Logos | WTSBooks]1
  2. Feinberg, John S. No One Like Him: The Doctrine of God. 2001. 880 pp. [Amazon | Crossway | Logos | WTSBooks]
  3. Clark, David K. To Know and Love God: Method for Theology. 2003. 464 pp. [Amazon | Crossway | Logos | WTSBooks]
  4. Cole, Graham A. He Who Gives Life: The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit. 2007. 320 pp. [Amazon | Crossway | Logos | WTSBooks]
  5. Allison, Gregg R. Sojourners and Strangers: The Doctrine of the Church. 2012. 496 pp. [Amazon | Crossway | Logos | WTSBooks]
  6. Wellum, Stephen J. God the Son Incarnate: The Doctrine of Christ. 2016. 496 pp. [Amazon | Crossway | Logos | WTSBooks]
  7. Feinberg, John S. Light in a Dark Place: The Doctrine of Scripture. 2018. 800 pp. [Amazon | Crossway | Logos | WTSBooks]
  8. McCall, Thomas H. Against God and Nature: The Doctrine of Sin. 2019. 448 pp. [Amazon | Crossway | Logos | WTSBooks]
  9. Cole, Graham A. Against the Darkness: The Doctrine of Angels, Satan, and Demons. Forthcoming (2019). 272 pp. [Amazon | Crossway | Logos | WTSBooks]
  10. TBD. Man. Forthcoming.
  11. VanGemeren, Willem. Allison, Gregg. Eschatology. Forthcoming.

I’m Out to Lunch

July 16, 2009 by Phil Gons

Someone from Elgin, Illinois (which I figured out by looking up his IP address) just tried to leave this encouraging comment on my contact page:

I just saw your post about Gilbert Bilezikian may I say that you my friend are out to lunch and need to read you bible more careful and instead of speaking out against this wonderful man why not engage him in a  public debate you may learn something from him.

Here’s a corrected edition for easier reading:

I just saw your post about Gilbert Bilezikian. May I say that you, my friend, are out to lunch and need to read your Bible more carefully. Instead of speaking out against this wonderful man, why don’t you engage him in a public debate? You may learn something from him.

I’ve received a couple of comments like this recently, so I thought I’d share some thoughts and give some suggestions for commenting on my blog.
